This edition of the Get Up and Go welcomes the return of spring with an egg-stra special schedule of events!

100 FSS presents the biggest event of the spring on Saturday, April 1, 2023: the Spring Eggstravaganza! Celebrate in egg-stravagant style with our annual carnival – featuring the Family Olympics, kart racing, 3-D Bunny photos, a petting zoo, bouncy castles, face painting, free laser tag, and of course, Easter eggs! It’s fun and it’s free!

Outdoor Rec has some great spring-themed events coming up in March with lambing in the English countryside - a great trip for all the family. Or take up the chance to do sea kayaking, sea fishing, beach buggying, mountain biking and caving for beginners. But don’t delay in signing up as space is limited!

Food Truck Rallies make a welcome return on St Patrick’s Day, Friday, March 17, 2023. Pick up some delicious food at our ever-popular rallies. And on the theme of St Patrick’s Day, the Daily Grind serves its ‘Let’s Go Green’ drinks throughout March.

It’s also that time of year to show off your artistic talents with the Air Force Art Contest. Enter your artwork into the competition with prizes for the winners. See page 10.

Find out about all these events and more in your indispensable Get Up and Go – brought to you by 100 FSS!

Black History Month highlight at Royal Air Force Mildenhall

Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,’ I like this quote for Black History month because education is our future,” said Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Baah, 100th Force Squadron Support, superintendent.

“I am from Ghana - Ghana is in West Africa – and in Ghana if you don’t go to school, you don’t have any future. When I

ABOVE: U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Baah, 100th Force Support Squadron Sustainment Flight Superintendent.

saw this quote from Nelson Mandela it resonated with me, because if it wasn’t for education, I wouldn’t have made it this far. To be a part of the world’s greatest Air Force.

When I was young, I didn’t take school seriously the way I was supposed to. Fortunately, I was able to come to the United States through a program in Ghana (my brother joined me in the U.S. a year after I arrived), to live with my

aunt in New York and through that I got my GED (General Education Development).

I didn’t take high school seriously enough to get a diploma, I studied for two months to get a GED. I then started school in Brooklyn and attended Columbus State University for a year before I transferred to Ohio State university. At this time a company that my brother and I worked for laid us off.

So, my brother decided to join the Army. He was sent to Germany and eventually I went to visit him. When I was there, I told him I’ve always loved being in uniform. He told me if I was considering joining a branch, I should join the Air Force. When I came back to the states, I went straight to a recruiter and joined. Open general was available for me and from that I got services, which is what I do now.

I did well there, but I didn’t stop with my education. I was able to get my Community College of the Air Force Degree, my bachelor's in Healthcare Management, and my master's in Business Administration.

Education never stopped and I’m still educating myself.”

RAFM pilot brings new angle to heritage after serving at three of four squadrons sharing 100th BG roots

During World War II, the 100th Bomb Group at Thorpe Abbotts, Diss, England, consisted of the 349th, 350th, 351st, and 418th Bomb Squadrons. A pilot from Royal Air Force Mildenhall, Capt. Brett Anderson, is now stationed at his third of the modern-day squadrons that all owe their heritage to the B-17 Flying Fortress pilots once stationed at the 100th BG.

Eurofighter Typhoons from RAF Coningsby stop by RAF Mildenhall

The aircraft, from RAF Coningsby, England, diverted here due to bad weather. The Typhoon is a highly capable and extremely agile multi-role combat aircraft, capable of being deployed for the full spectrum of air operations, including air policing, peace support and high-intensity conflict.
