MDP: Our Partners in Protection

MDP’s main role is to uphold local jurisdiction while engaging with the local community and working side-by-side with the 100th Security Forces Squadron at Royal Air Force Mildenhall to maintain installation security and deter potential threats to the base.

ABOVE: Ministry of Defense Police Constable John Kelly, authorized firearms officer and MDP Sergeant Daniel Sparks, senior police officer.

“We work together with regards to covering terrorist threats towards the base,” said Police Constable John Kelly, authorized firearms officer. “You’ve got Security Forces who predominantly works on the inside, almost exclusively, and we’re on the outside of the wire, engaging with the

local community to stop the threat from ever reaching base.”

MDP officers work around the clock patrolling the outside domain covering all areas within the tri-base area. The MDP station is composed of 11 officers who work in 12hour shifts to accommodate

the 24-hour schedule they must be on duty. MDP officers serve in different roles within the community.

“Our officers are also here to provide information to the community, whether it be military members arriving on station or local community members looking for guidance,” said Daniel Sparks, senior police officer and temporary police sergeant. “There is no reason to be frightened of us, we’re in no way out to get anyone. We’re trying to spread awareness that we’re here in Mildenhall and ready to help with any questions members might have.”

Not only do they enforce the law, they also hold weekly newcomers briefings where they offer advice and guidance on the rules and laws of the U.K. “We have dedicated units who go out into the British

public as well as run campaigns, provide training, and raise awareness of the repercussions of drink driving,” said Kelly. “We’re looking to bring the same type of training to U.S. bases by working with the commander and educating military members on viable information.”

The MDP Police is currently invested in educating service members and spreading awareness of the resources they offer to the community.

Creating a relationship within the community and keeping the public safe is the top priority for the MDP.

“I think the biggest point from us is that we’re all about education and trying to help people,” said Kelly. “We know that it’s difficult trying to live and work in a different country with diverse rules of which some not everyone may understand. We want people to enjoy their time here in the U.K. and ensure members are aware that we’re here to help.”

Mildenhall's Treasure

The Mildenhall Treasure is a large hoard of 34 masterpieces of Roman silver tableware from the fourth century AD, and by far the most valuable Roman objects artistically and by weight of bullion in Britain.

WORDS: Stephanie Palmer - Chair, Trustees Mildenhall Museum

Sponsored article - Mildenhall Museum. No federal endorsement of sponsor intended.

Picture the scene: it is a bitterly cold morning in January 1942. Britain has been at war for over two years, but, the annual cycle of the farming world continued as usual.

A local land owner, Fred Rolfe, had enlisted the aid of his neighbor Syd Ford, to assist with plowing his West Row farmland. Syd, being unavailable, asked friend Gordon Butcher to help. So, with the airfield busy nearby,

Gordon collected his tractor to deep plough the land for sowing beet.

In the mid-afternoon snowfall, Gordon busily kept to his ploughing until it struck something buried in the soil. Upon investigation, Gordon discovered it was a metal piece, and there were several others visible. He retrieved his friend Syd Ford, a noted collector or antiquities, and together they dug up 34 items! Syd

guessed they were pewter and took them home to clean them. One of his employees, Jack Thompson, helped to repair some pieces. Syd kept a photo of all the pieces on his mantelpiece – and a piece dubbed the “Great Dish” was used at Christmas.

At the end of the war in 1946, Syd was visited by fellow antiquarian, Dr. Fawcett, who realized the discovered pieces were in fact, silver. Dr. Fawcett

M ildENhall M USEUM
28 28 | DECEMBER 2022

instructed Syd to notify the police as this most certainly had been a buried treasure trove. Syd reluctantly agreed. Upon investigation, the police declared it was indeed a treasure trove – for which Syd and Gordon each were awarded 1,000 GBP.

Unfortunately, the land owner received nothing, and if Syd and Gordon had reported it when originally discovered, they would have received a much greater reward.

As the treasure was discovered in the Parish of Mildenhall, it was aptly called the Mildenhall Treasure and is one of the most important hoards of RomanoBritsh Treasure ever found. More recently, West Row became a separate Parish and wanted to rename the treasure as the West Row Treasure, but the British Museum was unwilling to change the academic literature stating that

ABOVE: A replica of the Great Dish at the Mildenhall Museum.

BELOW: Mildenhall Museum, located at 6 King Street, IP28 7EX.

when it was found, West Row had been part of Mildenhall.

MYSTERY TO PONDER

1. Who buried the treasure? And why? Several such hoards have been found along the fen edge and thoughts are that perhaps it was retreating Romans who hoped to be able to come back and retrieve it.

2. Where exactly was it found? Syd gave three different locations when giving his evidence statement, and at various times. Was he hiding something?

3. Suggestion has stated Americans possibly brought it over from North America, however, Americans were not present in the area in 1942.

4. It was discovered in Cavenham and then moved

to West Row. Why did they do that?

5. And finally, the missing piece! Jack Thompson came to see the replica when displayed at the Mildenhall Museum and inquired about “the other piece”. He provided a sketch description of the piece and no mention of it is in the list of recovered items. What happened to it? The actual Treasure Trove is on display at the British Museum in London and is described at RomanoBritish Silver. Mildenhall Museum has a complete replica for viewing and is put in its local context. We hope you visit us and learn more about this local Treasure and its mystery!
