April is going to be a wonderful month in FSS! As we begin to come out of the national lockdown and rules change, we will keep you informed and entertained. As seen on our cover, April is the Month of the Military Child! We are taking this time to recognize the importance and influence of military families and their children. The children and families of military personnel make tremendous sacrifices, which play a vital role as the foundation on which our military functions. With that in mind we are celebrating our children, longer days, more sun, and kid-friendly fun. Administrative Professionals Day is also on Wednesday, April 21 so be sure to celebrate your hard working support staff with a balloon arrangement from the Bob Hope Community Center! Orders can be placed April 1-20 including free delivery within RAF Mildenhall. Keep up to date through the month by subscribing to our weekly e-newsletter, The Hot 100th, for all the latest details. GET UP & LEVE L U P AT TH IS GR E AT NEW 1 0 0 FS S FAC I L I T Y ! Words by Rae Lovell

I

n an effort to embrace and highlight the interests of its Airmen and increase resiliency, The Air Force is compiling a team of elite gamers. The Air Force Gaming League will compete in the Evolution Championship Series (Evo for short). Evo connects newcomers with seasoned champions for competitions

that will reach across borders, with participants from many different countries and lifestyles. This is where our Airmen join the fun. Airmen of any rank can sign up to join the Air Force Gaming League to compete in this year’s tournament. The 2021 Evolution Championship Series will be held in Las Vegas from

July 21 to August 2. The next round of sign-ups will be later this year, so keep an eye on Air Force Gaming’s Facebook page and the 100 FSS Facebook page to get in on the season two team. Air Force Gaming’s mission is to embrace and encourage an inclusive gaming league for all LEFT: SrA Miguel Vazquez-

RAF Mildenhall has embraced this mission by creating a Gaming Room in the Bob Hope Community Center Airmen. It is believed that this league will promote resiliency, retention, teamwork, and mental well-being for all service members involved. One Capt. Oliver Parsons is credited with creating Air Force Gaming, the concept was then popularized by a group of Airmen at the Dyess Air Force Base in Texas and has now made it all the way to our base in Mildenhall. RAF Mildenhall has embraced this mission by creating a Gaming Room in the Bob Hope Community Center. The room has been custom-made for console gaming and decorated by our own Team Mildenhall members. It is home to a hand-drawn mural that includes some favorite gaming characters, this is a must-see stop on our base. To reserve time in the Gaming Room, contact the BHCC at 01638-54-2579.

AIRMAN SPOTLIGHT This month we highlight a special member of the 100 Force Support Squadron. Senior Airman; Artist; and Administrative Professional to the 100 FSS Commander. By day, Senior Airman Noah Wilber routes paperwork and assists the commander in keeping her calendar in order. By night, Wilber can be found drawing. He enjoys drawing people or interesting characters, when he is not working out or staying in with some sushi and a good book. Wilber, Wilbreezy to some, gave us a piece of advice for his younger Airman self, and other young Airmen. “Be Yourself”. Concise and to the point. Not unlike Wilbreezy himself. When asked what one super power he would choose, Wilber decided on time travel. He explained that time travel would provide the opportunity to slow time down so that he could accomplish more in a day. Speaking of Wilber’s accomplishments, this year he assisted in drawing a mural for the Gaming Room in Bob Hope Community Center. This is a focal point in RAF Mildenhall’s involvement in the new Air Force Gaming League. As well as an excellent opportunity to see how the passions of our Airmen can be integrated into bettering our lives in the Air Force Community. Stop by BHCC to enjoy some of Wilber’s art.

FINDING A Way To Thrive

RAFM Chapel Grows Virtual Presence

Finding a way to thrive throughout the pandemic

by Jennifer DeRedin

THE UNITED STATES Air Force Chaplain Corps was established soon after the USAF was made into a separate military branch by the National Security Act in 1947. The military chaplaincy caters to all faith practices and promotes military members’ right to exercise their respective religion. Like most organizations, the Chaplain Corps, and locally, the RAF Mildenhall Chapel, has had to re-organize their services due to the Covid-19 pandemic - rising to the challenges of “virtual church.” In order to

30

accommodate changing UK restrictions, the safety concerns of their constituents, and base guidelines, the chapel has re-invigorated and grown their online presence. According to Multi Media Coordinator, Elder Je’Mahl Ray, current circumstances have forced the chapel to expand in the best way possible, “ We have found a way to thrive, where more people can jump in.” By putting content out on more platforms than ever before, the chapel is giving people - who might not

Sunday service streaming live to social media channels.

otherwise have the opportunity - “a chance to re-energize and be reminded or encouraged” from wherever they may be, Ray explained. The RAF Mildenhall Chapel Facebook page was launched well before the onset of Covid-19,

Campus Life hosts weekly game nights and small group discussion sessions, giving teens a much needed chance to connect but since the first lockdown, the organization’s various programs have become increasingly active on the page. Sunday’s services are now streamed live and near-daily posts can be found with inspiring messages and information on how to “plug-in” to the various ministries. Additionally, the Multi Media team has launched a major project: a podcast and YouTube page. Airmen and their families now have the opportunity to listen to Chaplains’ messages on the go on the RAF Mildenhall Protestant Parish podcast, or participate in a new resilience video series, the “Mildenhall Monday Minute,” at RAF Mildenhall Chapel on YouTube. The video series in particular is designed to motivate people at the very start of their week. “We all can find ourselves ‘too busy,’” Ray said, “but everyone can spare a minute. We keep it apolitical so everyone can take part.” RAFM Protestant Parish

Coordinator, Virginia Thomas, explained that the Chapel’s main goal is to provide outreach and support for members of the tri-base community. “No matter what you are looking for, you can find it,” Thomas noted, “The fact that we can still commune together is such a godsend for so many people. The people in this community have such good hearts. There is a place for everyone, wherever you are in life.” “We have had to adapt since the start of Covid,” Thomas said, “a lot of our programs are meeting over zoom,” but despite the challenges, they have continued to flourish. For example, “Campus Life hosts weekly game nights and small group discussion sessions, giving teens a much needed chance to connect,” Thomas explained. Now that the United Kingdom has begun to loosen restrictions, many of the programs are starting to resume normal programming. “The chapel Facebook page is the best place to find out about the different programs,” Thomas said. She encouraged anyone who was interested to get in contact with chapel staff.

It's a survivor in a broad range of climates. Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely. Troy Pananon, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2021, to be the MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD on RAF Mildenhall. We call upon all personnel to recognize the important role military children play in the community which we live, and the future of the United States of America. Col. Troy S.
